Description Serves as a lead worker, coordinating and directing a crew engaged in utilities maintenance and construction. Performs skilled work in the safe operation of heavy equipment during the installation, maintenance, and repair of sanitary sewer and water assets. Operates heavy equipment such as dump trucks, trenchers, and backhoes to dig trenches, hauls dirt and debris, clears easements and operates a tractor-trailer to haul equipment. Investigates and communicates with citizens regarding complaints and inquiries in the absence of the Utility Crew Foreman.

Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with 2 to 3 years of experience in operation of heavy motorized equipment, and some experience as a lead worker.

Must have a valid Virginia Class A CDL Permit at the time of application. A valid Commercial Driver's License with tank endorsement issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to obtain such license and endorsement within six (6) months of employment is required.

General knowledge of the various types of pipes and fittings used in the construction and maintenance of utilities required.

Must have thorough knowledge of Miss Utility procedures for safely locating underground utilities, and thorough knowledge of the traffic laws/regulations, as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of motorized equipment.

Personal computer experience using Microsoft Office software desired.

Safety shoes required.

Drug testing and criminal background checks conducted prior to employment.

Supplemental Information Work is performed outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to the usual hazards associated with outside maintenance and construction work such as overhead and underground utilities, traffic, sewage, dust, and noise.

This position is considered an essential position which requires the individual report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions outside of normal working hours, or when County offices are closed, in addition to being on an on-call status on a regularly scheduled basis.

Physical Demands Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including tractors, front end loaders, excavators, compactors, bulldozers, etc., and hand tools including shovels, wrenches, torches, etc. Must be able to lift between 60-80 pounds, and be able to stand, bend, and stoop for a major portion of the day.
